As the cover says, this compilation (by DJ Ray Velasquez) is a mix of samba electronica, chilled out jazz, and Brazilian flavors. And oh Jebus, is this mix delectable! If you like Bossa Nova, jazzy House, or tropical chill out, this compilation will hit the spot, big time.
I enjoyed the entire album. Here's the breakdown:
Dancey cuts: 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 12
Mellow cuts: 1, 5, 9, 13
Track 3 is a groovin' remix of the single greatest House song of all the time!
Other favorite tracks: 2, 5, 6
- Captain Dee, 11/2004
1. Shakers everywhere, floating keyboard, tropical ambience. "Sitting on the Beach" indeed. (5:07)
**2. Brazilian drums and shakers, soothing rattling, mellow strumming guitars. Later deep bass, strings, and Portuguese vocals kick in. Lovely. (9:27)
***3. Japanese star producer Fantastic Plastic Machine remixes Franky Knuckles "Whistle Song" (my favorite House cut of all time). In this remix, the melody isn't whistled, but set to sexy vocals, complete with a dancey Brazilian party vibe and strings. Fucking amazing, especially if you know the original. (8:00)
*4. Opening track from the Dalminjo album that hit A-File this summer. Sexy guitar, deep bass, male "ahs" in the distance. Smooth. (5:23)
**5. A heartfelt tribute to Bossa legend Antonio Carlos Jobim. Uber jazzy keys, strings, bass, flute, drums. Addictive! (5:27)
**6. Drum & bass beat, blazing guitar riffs, jammin' piano, ill bassline, layers of ambience. Sick!! Dreamy vocal ending. (6:33)
7. A sexy get-down tune from John Beltram. Soulful vox, jazzy piano. Later, a guitar solo. (4:45)
8. More dancey shakers/beat and Bossa guitar under breathy male vox. A Masters at Work remix. (6:01)
9. Slow guitars, dreamy male vocals (duet at one point). A little boring... (4:41)
10. Echoing female vocals, driving bassline, noisy drums, strong flute. (6:39)
11. Foreboding/rhythmic bass, quiet sax, ethereal vocals, jazz club-ish piano. Nonstop shaker beat. (4:58)
*12. Another groovin' fiesta beat, this time with classy piano and female "aaahs." Guitar and electric organ towards the end. (6:48)
13. Synth ambience, repeated speech sample, sultry vox from Bebel Gilberto, slow beat. Distant guitar. Chill. (4:59)
