If you don’t know Piazzolla, you’re in for a treat. Bandoneon genius, composer, arranger, bandleader – he pretty much invented the modern tango and it don’t get better than this. It’s a rough “best of” that leaves out a few favorites but nevertheless manages to be a good sampling of his music. It’s all so damned good, you can’t go wrong with any track. Watch for applause.
*1. Too short. A dark, kind of restless sound. Very cool.
2. Delicious, slow/midtempo, romantic. Applause at end.
*3. Varying tempos trip & halt overall a sense of longing. Applause.
4. Lush, lyrical duet w/Mulligan on sax. Jazzy, mostly midtempo.
5. Lots of strings, piano. Mostly midtempo.
6. An epic. Starts slow, almost classical, gets faster, more modern.
*7. Like a movie theme. Dramatic, sweeping, very cinematic.
8. Tragic, fragile, delicate. Lovely and so very, very sad.
*9. Another lush, cinematic sound. Strong w/lots of strings/piano.
10. Bright, great strings. Lyrical, mostly midtempo.
*11. A quirky sound, tripping but melodic. Midtempo.
12. Vocals by Roberto Gooyeneche. Romantic but sad.
13. A French café feel. Sweet, slow & much too short.
*14. Ode to his father. At times jazzy, mournful, lively. Applause
