Incredible collection of ultra rare 1960’s Thai pop that is altogether exotic, garage, Motown, psyche, and disturbing. Culled from lost 45’s (half the tracks are “scratchy”) these are a perfect melding of SE Asia and West, but with an undeniable Motown, American 60’s Go-Go garage pop influence. Great!! The best part is: Who needs acid if you have this!! Check out the great liner notes for sure. (When Johnny Mags at Amoeba recommends a CD I always fork out for it…with never a regret. Thanks Johnny Mags!)
1) Motown meets Bollywood- “yok yok” means Jump Jump, tambourine beat w/ horns, great
2) whoa, bow bow bow deep vocal embellishments, strange as hell
3) upbeat, moree melodic and what you might expect, female vocs
4) again, more straight, male vocs are really hypnotic and strange
5) Motown swing w/ female vocs
6) shimmy shimmy co-co bop, classic cover
7) sung in English, up-beat fast feel, funny cover of Neil Diamond
8) hilarious cover of Elvis’ “All Shook Up”, almost casio quality, this will freak out everyone on acid
9) cool psyche Thai
10) smarmy dark feel, male vocs
11) loungey feel w/ bass sax somehow
12) a twisted cover of Serge Gainsboure classic, no fem vocs and lyics changed to “saving the environment and respecting nature”!
13) Funk-kay! Wilson Pickett cover in English
14) holy shit: country! “thai smurf Hank Williams song”- yer cheatin heart covered like you’ve never heard before: the last verse made me laugh out LOUD causing quite a stir on the Caltrain!!
15) interesting mechanical cover of Lady Maddonna
16) mellow psyche peace love feel in English
17) upbeat, fem vocs
18) upbeat
19) romantic feel, in English
20) trippy psyche, strange vocalizations, screaming, weird!!
