NEW ORLEANS JAZZ VIPERS – “Live on Frenchmen St.”
self-released, 2004
Swingin’ sextet from N.O., keeping the flame and doing it right. The Vipers play these standards with verve and plenty of New Orleans flair: check out the fine layered playing, the strong slap bass (boosted by bass sax), the charming vocals (by 4 different band members) and the touch of class added by guitar & violin. Recorded live at their regular gig at the Spotted Cat. Fun!
FO’S PICKS: 1, 4, 6, 8, 10… but it’s all very good!
1. 5:35 – toe-tapping midtempo stomp, growling vocal. Fine solos all ‘round.
2. 5:29 – relaxed tempo, smooth vocal, sweet solos from violin & others
3. 6:49 – upbeat riffin’ vox, loose jamming feel.
4. 7:33 – slow drag, growly alto sax & vox. Lovely solos from violin, trumpet
5. 8:30 – uptempo & loose, with hip-shakin’ rhythm, fun jivin’ vocal.
6. 6:45 – lazy southern ballad: real nice support for vocals, fine trumpet/sax
7. 7:15 – upbeat: a tough guy’s love song, excellent trumpet & strong guitar
8. 4:38 – upbeat stomp with solid bass and cute lyrics
9. 5:29 – breezy swing, arranged like a little big band, very nice duo vocal
10. 8:17 – very slow and low-down Fats Waller tune, gruff vocals fit perfectly
11. 4:40 – upbeat bounce, light and breezy with nice trumpet & violin
12. 3:54 – midtempo: classic marijuana song with growly vocal + piano
