A ncw great compilation of 60’s pop art icon, with his decadent (or smut) lyrics and bubblegum/bossa/jazzy pop music. Great loungy feeling with his classics, and also a few cool newer remixes. Two separate CDs, the first mostly classic songs from the 60’s and early 70’s (though there’s one remix at the end) and the second split between his earliest songs (jazzy songs from the late 50’s, early 60’s) and much later remixes (funny arrangement). Asterisks mark my favorites.
*1. A pretty cha cha cha with congos and spy movie opening.
*2. Bossa nova.
3. Cha cha cha with horns.
4. Nostalgic-feeling song. Very French story-telling style (see Jacques Brel).
5. Romantic sha-la-la.
6. Euro-Beat classic. The song of the yeah-yeah-yeah. *7. Euro jazzy pop.
8. Bubblegum Euro pop with woman’s laughter. This type of laughter was very popular back then.
*9. Cinematic pop song about the comic strip with the sex symbol of that time, and his partner, the film star Brigitte Bardot doing sound effects.
10. Another cinematic a-la Americaine pop song, with key words added by Gainsbourg’s next partner Jane Birkin.
*11. A sequel to the classic “Je t’aime… moi non plus” love making song, also with Jane Birkin.
*12. Cool, slightly funky song.
13. A song about the year spent in London with Jane Birkin (no smut in spite of the name and the chorus).
14. Another of his classic songs. A quiet ballad with a woman whispering Melody Nelson.
15. A very French story-telling song, sung with very sexy/mysterious half whisper.
16. Wah Wah guitar and piano.
17. A funkier song, the theme song of the erotic hit film Emmanuelle (or goodbye Emmanuelle, I’m not sure).
18. Folky song with acoustic guitar, about Him leaving Her (written in Gainsbourg’s cynical/circular style, “I came to tell you that I’m leaving”).
19. A remix of the all time favorite J’ai t’aime.. most appropriately done by “the Vibrators”.
