Two free-jazz old timers join forces. Braxton is very well known and thickly represented in our library. Fine is less of an avant-household name but has released a lot of material lately, much of it on the London-based Emanem label.
Abstract stuff -- one continuous improvisation split into mostly short tracks. Fine switches off between piano, clarinet, and drums, while Braxton selects from a few different saxophones mostly from higher registers. Pieces range from the studious (2,10) to cathartic blowouts (parts of 6,8,11).
- Tiny blip.
- Fast-paced, studious. A conservatory improv. Sax+piano.
- Quiet, delicate. Some really high squeaks. Sax+piano.
- Thoughtful. Gets aggressive but with lots of "white space." Sax+drums, mostly (9 mins.)
- Fairly fast squabble, then slower, lyrical. Sax+piano.
- Squirrelly, a bit angry. Sax+clarinet.
- Fast but sparse, fluttery. Sax+clarinet.
- Quiet start, into busy sax+piano. Gets aggressive.
- The epic (18 mins.) Slow, fairly quiet start. Builds patiently into choppy aggression (-11:00) then calmer sax+drums. Fierce near the end.
- Classical feel, serious mid/slow. Sax+piano
- Splashy piano / shrill clarinet / furious piano. (10 mins.)
