ANOUSHKA SHANKAR – “Rise”
Angel, 2005
INDIA – Anoushka, daughter and disciple of Ravi Shankar, breaks out of the classical tradition with nine modern compositions, bringing in bass and electronics alongside the older instruments. She even steps away from the sitar, playing keyboards on several tracks! The results sound very much like a Realworld label release: atmospheric, compelling, tensely exciting, but also very heavily studio-produced. Anoushka has truly arrived. Great stuff!
TRY IT ALL! Fo’s picks: 2, 3, 6, 1, 8
1. 6:21 – dark & cinematic: long intro, then sitar/piano/flute trade off slinky melody
2. 4:50 – fast vocal perc over a steady pulse; slow flute, big vocal-drum crescendo!
3. 5:41 – moaning intro, then pounding rhythm with low duo male vox, lotsa drums
4. 4:17 – sitar meditation over synth drone, plus effects
5. 7:26 – piano & sitar roam through a dark soundscape; steady plodding rhythm
6. 7:05 – sweet fem vocal in a swirly, mysterious atmosphere; a bit of pop feel
7. 6:11 – sinister, creepy: moaning male vox + vocal perc, assembled bits & pieces
8. 8:55 – slow and very “exotic” with tabla, dulcimer, strings. 2nd half is faster.
9. 11:07 – slow & powerful, fuses classical & modern elements nicely, but it’s long
