L.A. Power Pop that harkens back to the sound of the mid 1970s, when AM radio was king, Billy Seluga was all the rage, and rock bands still employed piano players. The result is a song set heavy on buoyant melodies and cheeky jollity. But don't write this off as Bubblegum as The 88 have done their homework... their music is neither insincere nor kitschy but rather a true labor of love for audiophiles who continue to worship at the alter of Marc Bolin, The Kinks, The Beach Boys, and Sweet. An immediately enjoyable listen of a pop sound that's definitely an anomaly in 2006 but which should appeal to the 20th Century Boy in all of us. No FCCs. Favorites: 2, 1, 3, 6 – Boo
*1) Up Tempo rocker with sunny harmonies, tinkering piano, and a stolen guitar riff from The Creation. Think The Raspberries. Ends cold.
*2) Starts off soft then builds with wailed vocals and jaunty piano. Dark lyrics betray the sunny music. Damn catchy chorus that sticks.
*3) Mid tempo with some glam swagger. Features handclaps, horns, and another infectious chorus.
4) Dizzy angst-filled waltz. Souring vocals sound a little too bombastic for me.
5) Mid Tempo ballad.
*6) Catchy pop built around a sing-along chorus with a propulsive bass line, tambourines, and Moot the Hoople-era piano
7) Opens softly and morphs into a bouncy number complete with "la la la" background vocals.
8) Slow Tempo Ballad- Warm vocals and acoustic guitar. Pretty. Similar to Big Star's "Thirteen".
9) Mid Tempo
10) Woozy Sultry Lounge music. Features accordion. Sounds like a drunken striptease.
11) Infectious, spirited, riff-happy saloon song. Much Pomp
12) Bluesy & bass-heavy. Tortured vocals. Nice searing guitar at the end.
