[COLL]: The Now Sound of Brazil 2
Ziriguiboom/Six Degrees, 2006
BRAZIL – a selection of modern Brazilian cool (and remixes of same) from Ziriguiboom Records, blending samba/bossa tunes and rhythms with heavy downtempo electronica production. Mostly chill stuff, and highly enjoyable, although personally I’ve always preferred the live-human, acoustic sound.
Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 5, 8, 11, 12
1. 5:53 – lovely, breathy English vocal in a swirly - sparkly atmosphere
2. 3:34 – uptempo stomp beat, quirky trio(?) vocal, a bloopy break in the middle
3. 4:20 – organ & lots of loops (conga, guitar, vocal, etc); breathy male lead vox
4. 3:24 – nice voice, acoustic guitar, gently loping rhythm, neighborhood ambiance
5. 4:33 – pretty bossa: fine male voc, acoustic bass, clave, echoey flute, guitar
6. 3:43 – odd samba with good vox & trombone, warbly ice-rink organ in b’ground
7. 4:57 – schizophrenic remix: drippy guitar, triphop beats, filtered lead vox.
8. 4:21 – uptempo rhythm with relaxed vocal wrapped in a swirl of mystery. Nice!
9. 5:02 – Lee “Scratch” Perry! Cutesy samba-reggae ditty, lots of echo on the vox
10. 3:44 – stiff Casio-ish beat, wordless vox, little riffs… why do I like this so much?
11. 4:17 – deep muddy bass, strong fem vox, symphonic swirl, some beeps/burps
12. 4:22 – uptempo shaker, with jazzy horns, coolly nasal male vox
13. 4:49 – uptempo beat, mellow wordless vox, berimbau & guitar in the mix
14. 5:44 – dinnerware clanking, big floaty keyboards, plain fem vox, sparkly bits
