Gentle and often thoughtful jazz based in complex composing and plenty of space for solos, a sort of tribute to Steve Lacy. Accessible stuff with substantial intelligence, played by a troupe of great local folks led by veteran Goldberg on clarinet.
Clarinet + violin (Carla Kihlstedt) lend a klezmer air to many tracks, probably quite intentionally and the two in unison make for a dreamy sound. While many of the tempos are upbeat, there's a lonely and sad air to many tracks, as Lacy, one of Goldberg's heroes, had unexpectedly died days earlier.
- Slowish, small chamber piece
- Mid/fast w/hard beat. A catchy, jazzy ball of fun
- Midtempo flutterings, upbeat but spare. Bass intro.
- Gently crazy, w/darting violin/sax/clarinet
- Slow lingering piece w/vocal: "I am hardly here these days." Derived from a fax Lacy sent to Goldberg; there's a touching story in the liner notes about their association.
- Small "blinks" of music building into a nice group jam. Ends with a brisk march. Steve Lacy composition.
- Infectious bass riff under a midtempo dissonant theme, almost brash. Plucked violin for a calm intro.
- Floaty, mid/slow.
- Clarinet doodles, midtempo, over sneaky bass/violin pecking
- Reflective, with long tones. Reprise of 5 w/o vocals.
- Slow. Lonely violin intro, then warm slow-jazz sax solo
- Midtempo flow, slow fluttering feel
- Mid/slow riff behind a collision of coolly burning solos
- Slow, perky, a Steve Lacy song? "Hidden" track.
