Album Review
Your Imaginary Friend
Reviewed 2006-05-24
Croatian artists, what one might call “anti-folk” though these guys are a half a world away from trends and labels. Dark spooky folk played on acoustic guitars, recorded live in low fi manner, even noisey at times. The appearance of moaning scratchy bowing (cello? Viola?) now and then is creepy, as is the inclusion of voices off-mic, use (over-use?) of simple effects, and the general air. All vocals in the indigenous language, this is altogether exotic, dark, hip. Another winner from our friends in Croatia.

1) strange pitch changed voice with spooky noise
2) acoustic guitar Balkan folk, brief
3) acoustic guitar with strange bowing and desperate vocs, dark and cool, with a cacophony ending
4-5) a bit more standard folk sound, ballady
6) strange looping noise as intro, then a slow sparse dark/sad ballad
7) buried distant voices in intro then slow dark ballad builds with the strange bowing
8) minor toned repetitive
9) pensive guitar picking, sad feeling in vocs
10) flanger on acoustic guitar, set on high, sparse weird, especially the last minute or so where it enters a reverb canyon
11) a noise piece, looping echo’ed treatments, murkey and quiet, certainly not harsh
