Straight jazz with Rahsaan's usual craziness in the sax solos, including incredibly long and fast runs, and the playing of multiple saxes at once. (Note that the band has no other horn player.) You can hear why Rahsaan got callously labeled as a vacuous showman by some (a couple of shallow song choices doesn't help there) ... and you can also see why others think he's a grand master of jazz. There's also some nice piano, often overshadowed by Rahsaan.
1972 concert recorded by German state radio. Most tracks segue.
1- Big swirling intro. Then, breezy summery mid/fast work. Sax solo SEGUES into:
2- Yes, it's the cheesy lite-rock hit by Bread. Includes some nice playing, but it's avoidable.
3- Bright mid/fast, a bit manic. Piano solo early on; crazy sax.
4- "My Girl" cover, poppy and sugary.
5- Renaissance Faire flute, gentle... blasts into superfast speed.
6- Big, bright, fast, busy. Big '70s sound to the horns (played by Kirk alone). REALLY long held note in the last few minutes
7- Slow and romantic, meant as an intro to #8
8- Spry, fast reading of a shadowy 'Trane classic
9- Mid/fast 'Trane classic, blues changes. Goes 17 minutes, most of it Kirk soloing, including some really impressive unaccompanied parts. Oh -- nice piano solo too.
