Prince Jammy – Dub Culture
Reviewed by Sadie O., 2/2/07
Classic roots rock reggae dub from the royal family thereof. Prince Jammy studied under King Tubby, but has his own style – notably, the bass is always very prominent, while everything else does the usual popping in and out… Jammy became famous for electronic dancehall production, but this stuff is earlier. Nice dubby dub!
No lyrics, no FCCs. I like 8, 12 and 15, and especially 9.
1. 3:47 **classic midtempo roots rock dub skank. Light em up!
2. 3:04 **somewhat downtempo with prominent electric guitar and strong one-drop.
3. 3:11 **slow nyahbinghi riddim, minimalist, with some very unusual but subtle effects. Rather like “Justice Tonight” unplugged.
4. 3:17 **downtempo with horns way up front in the mix.
5. 4:10 **midtempo with lots of odd effects. Dub of one of the cuts off the first Black Uhuru records, which Jammy produced.
6. 3:57 **slow, slow, mysterious dub
7. 3:30 **midtempo stepping razor dub.
8. 3:26 ***midtempo very random ultra-dub.
9. 3:47 ****midtempo with melodica, another early Black Uhuru song dubbed to bits!
10. 3:14 **midtempo piano-based stepping razor skank.
11. 3:11 **there’s a really cool guitar and keyboard line buried WAY back there…
12. 4:11 ***midtempo skank – bass even more prominent than usual.
13. 3:38 **sweet horn intro gets dubbed to mess, then downtempo bass and drums with horns floating over..Some really gnarly noises
14. 3:28**downtempo, mostly drums and clackers, very subdued
15. 3:07 ***midtempo, double tom beat, nice riddim
