ENRICO PIERANUNZI TRIO: Live in Japan
CamJazz, 2007
PIANO TRIO – Heartfelt modern jazz, recorded over a week of concerts in 2004. This group specializes in ballads, and even when the music sweeps and swoops there is a delicately aching quality running throughout the music. Top-notch stuff, if you’re in the right mood.
All good. Fo’s Picks: Disc 1 – 2, 3, 5 Disc 2 – 2, 3, 4, 7
DISC ONE:
1. 01:50 – very soft, gentle ballad
2. 15:21 – solo bass intro; spiky piano into a cool swing, lots of movement with fine solos from all. The time goes by pretty fast.
3. 07:51 – pretty jazz-waltz, lilting melody: sensitive bass, piano adds muscle
4. 06:23 – sad, dusky ballad: spacious, with plenty of depth, perfect interplay
5. 08:22 – light stroll w/ repetitive riff, uptown-bluesy piano, fine bass & drums
6. 04:24 – softly billowing ballad, pretty melody and complex interactions
7. 15:22 – solo drum intro, quietly unsettling atmosphere becomes low pulse, then a mystery groove, a quick burner and an easy swing…
DISC TWO:
1. 05:54 – relaxed, introspective ballad; picks up steam
2. 07:52 – low sneak, quick bass solo, lopsided piano, spare drums
3. 02:23 – solo piano, dark & impressionistic
4. 07:18 – pleasant sing-song melody, warm piano & bass solos
5. 07:52 – melancholy ballad, elegant piano, soft bass
6. 09:12 – soft ballad, sort of wafts along, but builds as it goes
7. 11:07 – solo piano intro, then a careful walk with nice playing from all
