DJ Drez & Marty Williams – Moon Bay Sessions
Reviewed by Sadie O., 9/26/07
Local Hip Hop/Jazz collaboration recorded in Half Moon Bay. Mostly downtempo and mellow grooves with a lot of funk, very jazzy piano, horns and standup bass. Interesting mash-up, impressive talents. Everything is really lovely and interesting.
No FCCs detected – very upful, really. I love 2 and 5 most.
1. 3:51 **electronics intro, then a very funky smooth-jazzy downtempo groove with a bit of scratching and vocals way back in the mix. Insanely cool piano and beat box bit in middle.
2. 4:27 ****drums with brushes, jazzy horns and piano, and a laid back wildly funky riddim. Man, this beat is NUTZ! Some pretty female vocals (I know I’ve heard the song before) toward end.
3. 4:31 **one note beat intro (note continues…), then laid back jazz hop beat, hip hop raps in front of mix.
4. 2:02 **piano arpeggios and hand claps intro, downtempo mellow hip hop groove, scratched-up rap. A bit of bhangra drum, a bit of funky guitar.
5. 3:59 ****hey, it’s dub Reggae, how bout that! Downtempo and highly syncopated – very cool.
6. 3:32 **jazz piano and scratched hip hop beat and vocals (snippets of several voices.) I mean a LOT of scratching…
7. 4:41 **very downbeat jazz groove with lovely female singing and a bit of hip hop in the beat.
8. 1:58 **midtempo FUNKY O.G. hip hop with jazz piano. too short!
9. 4:29 **long spoken intro with nightclub noises, then standup bass and piano, steady beat and bongos, a bit of bluesy guitar.
10. 3:43 **laid back jazz groove with smooth hip hop rap.
11. 0:50 night club noises, random bits of stuff.
12. 4:36 ***midtempo hiccuppy funk, organ and horns (esp. lots of sax). Bits of calypso (?) singing.
13. 5:14 **female jazz vocals into, then downtempo jazz with standup bass and piano, just a bit of hip hop in the beat.
14. 5:55 * downtempo jazz with a bit of hip hop in the beat – yes, it’s a cover of that song… Fun vocal bit near end, low key piano outro.
15. 4:17 ***downtempo funky hip hop with bongos and recognizable sample from earlier hip hop hit – has it come to that? Ha ha! Jazzy flute.. bit of cuica… SITAR?
16. 3:49 **straight up midtempo hip hop beat, scratching, jazzy instruments, vocal duet, male & female raps. Mellow but nice.
17. 4:30 ***talking drum & high hat intro. Very funky midtempo stroll, nice beat, jazz piano and bits of scratching. This one will put the paper umbrella in whatever you’re drinking.
18. 1:31 female speaking intro, arpeggios, chords & basic beat.
