JIM CONNOLLY & GOVE COUNTY PHILHARMONIC: Time Stops to Visit
Fabulous folksy nostalgia with lots of quirky little touches, like the score to an imaginary film about some very strange American town in the early 1900s. Touches of Fellini/Rota, Copland, etc. Just great stuff.
All marvelous. Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 3, 6, 8, 10
1. 2:50 – bouncy circus music, Nino Rota style, the title says it all.
2. 3:32 – nostalgic strings & piano, little bass solo & brief confusion w/horns
3. 2:10 – quick & quirky: fast theme w/angular accents, then craziness
4. 10:18 – slow piano & trumpet, melancholy tune slowly builds up to heavy strings, calms down for sweet clarinet solo and back to start
5. 1:18 – violin/cello duet, then fast Americana reel
6. 3:02 – nostalgic sunny-day waltz, wacky trumpet, free interlude, screams!
7. 1:56 – speedy violin/cello duet, becomes more atmospheric
8. 5:14 – medium bounce: pleasant melody, nice flowing feel, oddball trumpet
9. 2:01 – serious violin/cello duet
10. 4:42 – tense intro, somber strings, brief cacophony, slow bounce to end
11. 2:18 – slow & nostalgic bowed bass with sawing accordion
12. 3:32 – relaxed backwoods waltz, sweet tune, fem vox
