DUO CARAMURU/BALDANZA: Bossa in the Shadows
Labor, 2007
Pianist Fabio Caramuru and electric bassist Pedro Baldanza create a unique blend of Brazilian jazz, folk music and avant/modern classical ideas. Caramuru sounds elegant but powerful, while Baldanza lays down complex beds of choppy, chattering rhythm. Interesting stuff.
Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 11, 12, 13, 18
1. aggressive afro-samba rhythm
2. abstracted walking choro line
3. free-sounding tangle & stroll
4. slow experimental ballad
5. gentle freeform bossa nova
6. chugging train sound, breakdown
7. mechanized variation on Jobim
8. gently spinning sensation
9. trad. dance rhythm abstracted
10. deconstructed folk ballad
11. mechanical stream of notes
12. scattered melody comes together
13. a calmer variation of track #3
14. tinkly piano & sneaky bass
15. very quiet & slow, lots of space
16. busy, with growing tension
17. thump, avant tango, weird waltz
18. walking rhythm, stabbing tones
