Classic Lester Young, backed by a band that includes Horace Silver, Lee Abrams, and more. Recorded live in the 50s (don’t expect crystal-perfect sound quality), but with a wonderful “you are there” atmosphere (some crowd noise). I also love how he stands back and lets his sidemen fly. It’s solid, no-frills, and wickedly good. These recordings are from NBC radio shows, so there are often announcements and repeat tracks.
*1. Swinging and fiery with great solos and a tight groove.
*2. Relaxed and breezy “Foggy Day.” With the sax leading the way.
*3. Uptempo Latin-infused groove w/trumpet & piano kicking ass.
*4. Upbeat, crazily energetic bop with some nice twists & turns.
5. Short radio announcement, leads right into #6
