HOLLY COLE: Holly Cole
Koch, 2007
JAZZ VOCALS – Deliciously smoky, decadently slinky songs; this is Cole’s best work in over a decade, with some great musicians backing her up (from just piano up to a nonet). Swinging, sexy, and super-cool.
Fo’s Picks: 1, 4, 5, 6, 9, 10
1. 4:17 – ooooh… lowdown big-band sound, purring vocal
2. 3:26 – fast Mancini theme swirls around almost deadpan vox; hot sax solo
3. 4:32 – aching ballad: sultry rhythm and lush horns
4. 4:22 – swaying, folksy version of an Antonio Carlos Jobim classic
5. 4:03 – 60s novelty hit done as a slow back-alley creep. Mee-ow-wow-wow!
6. 3:38 – cocktail jazz; an original tune that sounds like a standard
7. 2:07 – bittersweet standard, just voice & piano
8. 3:51 – slow horn intro, then a fast, chunky swing
9. 5:46 – slow, kittenish vocal wrapped in rich horns; very nice
10. 3:04 – sweet back-porch swing, great clarinet & trombone
11. 4:07 – slow, sad waltz; soft vox, gentle accordion
