ROY CAMPBELL ENSEMBLE: Akhenaten Suite
AUM Fidelity, 2008
AVANT-GARDE – Adventurous but accessible suite dedicated to Akhenaten, the heretic pharaoh who overthrew traditional Egyptian religion, art and culture 3,300 years ago. Campbell channels the almost alien antiquity of his subject through sour tones and rumbling polyrhythms, creaky ensemble passages and fiery solo flights. Some ears may rebel at unusual tunings & harmonies, but it’s quite good.

2. 6:29 – gentle ballad, flows slowly, acrid trumpet & violin scribblings
3. 2:54 – abstract, fluttering interlude: sharp recorder & sawing strings
4. 10:24 – pulsing tension: sour trumpet, solos have controlled intensity
5. 3:07 – mournful strings with reed pipe bleatings, muted trumpet
6. 10:30 – straightforward rolling groove, strong angular solos all around
7. 12:09 – relaxed lyrical groove, friendly modern sound but still creaky
