The Last Shadow Puppets – The Age of the Understatement
Reviewed by Sadie O., 6/2/08
Retro-psychedelic pop with some reverb and lots of strings… Two young British guys and a producer recreating the world of the late 60’s, but with sometimes creepy and sometimes 60’s cinematic overtones.
No FCCs detected. I like 1, 4, 10, and esp. 6 best.
1. 3:08 ***random whirring intro, then uptempo running beat and psychedelic fuzz guitar garage rock.
2. 2:18 *Byrds-y uptempo folky strumming, with some orchestra and bombast. Which is ok – no big arguments here.
3. 2:26 **LONG fade in, lopsided 6/8 whirl with a hint of Bond.
4. 2:38 ***martial stomp and tremolo, farfisa! Early psychedelia feel.
5. 2:37 *random electronic chimes intro, then sweet midtempo 60’s pop orchestration with vaguely Beatles-ish vocals. Fades out to bits of electronic tones for last half minute or so.
6. 2:44 ****bits of big vocals intro, then uptempo reverb-laden psychedelia – great sound! Turns into a waltz of the damned. Few seconds of dripping at end.
7. 3:05 **midtempo syncopation, pretty chimes and sweet vocals. Some BIG orchestration, fraught as heck with drama.
8. 4:00 *uptempo and fairly cinematic (in a European sort of way). Fades to squeeping and strangeness.
9. 3:05 **midtempo, very creepy 6/8, then uptempo fuzzed out snarl. He sounds serious…
10. 2:29 ***uptempo 6/8 with Bond-ish strings, I think I hear drugs talking.
11. 3:56 **ballet strings into Carnaby-street movie music. OK, it’s kinda hard to describe, but with familiar aspects.
12. 2:22 *downtempo lone strummed acoustic guitar and echo-laden vocals. Sounds terribly meaningful.
