TIM ADAMS: Images of My Spirit
KMPD, 2007
SOLO LOG DRUM – Adams, a symphonic percussionist and educator, performs beautiful, meditative pieces on log drum, a hollow instrument with a resonant, marimba-like tone. The music is somewhat reminiscent of gamelan. Dwayne Dolphin adds electric piccolo bass on four tracks (5,6,7,11), and some later tracks have vocals (think Bobby McFerrin).
Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 4, maybe 2, 8, 10
1. 4:04 – improvisational solo, soft and meditative
2. 4:14 – variations on a simple walking pattern
3. 3:42 – enigmatic: circular, atmospheric loop interrupted by random phrases
4. 3:56 – uptempo hush, gradually gets more energetic
5. 4:35 – very moody atmosphere, drum wanders over reverb bass pattern
6. 3:34 – melodic drum, quiet and dusky, a bit spooky; joined by bass
7. 4:35 – walking drum pattern; bass a bit like blues guitar
8. 5:11 – jungle feel: overdubbed(?) log drum with quiet vocal accents
9. 2:57 – complex pattern and quiet but sweet wordless vocals
10. 5:15 – full vocal (a sung poem) and walking rhythm with fast breaks
11. 1:42 – mellow piccolo bass solo
