DAVE HOLLAND SEXTET: Pass It On
Dare2, 2008
MODERN JAZZ – Acclaimed bassist Holland introduces a new band, with a fresh and fluent sound marked by seamless interplay. Several tunes rework Holland’s older material (3,4,5,7,8); the rest are new. All are excellent, vibrant examples of what straightahead modern jazz still has to offer… it’s a sparkling disc, with great performances from all.
No duds here! Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 4, 7, 8, 9
1. 8:11 – percolating tune, great drums: long hopping intro, then strides along
2. 6:31 – upbeat modern-bop burner with a sort of Caribbean breeze rhythm
3. 10:07 – relaxed solo bass into a low, slow slide; fine trumpet & sax solos
4. 8:07 – flaring theme, trumpet adds kindling, trombone chatters, hot drums
5. 9:09 – nuanced ballad: tender piano & sax; gains strength towards the end
6. 5:58 – upbeat & breezy with a popping feel: solos for trombone, piano
7. 13:45 – Sam Rivers tribute: sax burns in a jumbled surge; virtuoso bass solo, melody emerges halfway thru, walks heavily, drums scatter it
8. 4:33 – dreamlike ballad: horns drift on gentle waves; fine trumpet work
9. 7:56 – bluesy tune with nifty chugging rhythm, optimistic solos
