MIKE FROST PROJECT: Live
Blujazz, 2008
BEBOP – Retro and proud, Chicago-based brothers Mike (sax) and Steve (trumpet) Frost tear things up with an old-school Hammond B3 organ combo. These live tracks are classic blowing sessions, with somewhat low-fi recording and lots of club noise giving them a gritty bootleg feel. Most tracks could totally pass as a lost recording from the late 1950s / early ‘60s. Enjoy… but watch out for the guitarist’s groaning when he solos. I don’t mind it, but it might drive you nuts.
Fo’s Picks: 2, 4, 5, 6
1. 8:21 – speedy Charlie Parker bebop jam, everybody gets a solo
2. 5:24 – jumpin’ blues burner; nice riff, hot sax/guitar/trumpet vs. cool organ
3. 8:57 – wistful contemporary sound: soprano sax, piano, vibes
4. 6:27 – Sonny Rollins bop: merry sax & trumpet solos, lots of crowd noise
5. 12:43 – Dexter Gordon walking blues: easy pace; long, relaxed solos
6. 6:08 – Ellington ballad: sweet, loving treatment; excellent sax work
7. 7:43 – happy original swinger, with bongos! Very likeable, solos ramp up
8. 12:24 – straight-up 12-bar blues jam, relaxed. Extra groans from guitarist.
