County bluegrass blues meets pop and rock n’ roll. The performances on this record are very ‘fun,’ lighthearted, and it all sounds really retro. The first 5 songs sort of blend together, but after track 6 the album is more unique and focused. Ukulele, electric guitar, acoustic guitar, bass, drums, and fiddle form the base instrumentation. The ukulele used as a rhythm guitar really gives Mad Tea Party a unique sound. Out of Asheville, North Carolina, the group incorporates so many varied styles so seamlessly. I sort of disliked this at first, because I wasn’t really in the mood, but the fun is pretty infectious. Decent album, no FCC’s noted.
1. Uptempo opening, bluesy, fuzzy guitars, male and female vocals, background male vocals, key change near end of the song (2:07)
2. Sounds like some ukulele with rhythm guitar part, dirty distorted guitars bridge (2:25)
3. (2:59)
4. Relaxed feel to this one, jangly rhythm guitar, smooth backing vocals, builds with tambourine percussion (2:40)
5. Female voice-focused, bluesy (2:43)
*6. Fiddle opens this track, passionate, strong male vocals, iteration of a traditional track, light percussion, bluesy(3:02)
7. Slower, female-driven track, melodious, fiddle present, light loungey percussion, summery feel to the track(2:35)
8. Vocals go back and forth, uptempo rock n’ roll, refrain of ‘whaddya want?’ (2:16)
9. Bluesy Americana about being an awkward kid growing up, very focused, rhythmic, concise pop tune (2:54)
10. Light, slow acoustic strumming, waltz, country feel to this one with fiddle, (3:18)
*11. Surf rock bluesy opening guitar, and ukulele, and drums/tambourine frame this instrumental, which happens to be one of the strongest tracks on the album (3:09)
12. Sounds similar to track 11 with opening, female vocals, title track, hearkens back to tracks 1-5 in execution and structure (2:07)
*13. Male vocals are distorted, lengthy guitar solo in the middle of the track, longest song on album by far (4:16)
