AARON IRWIN GROUP: Blood and Thunder
Fresh Sound/New Talent, 2008
MODERN JAZZ – This introverted quintet features dense yet natural-sounding interplay. It’s more straightforward than the time-shifting sound of Irwin’s Into the Light (2006), but his compositions still display an intriguing flow and ear-catching harmonics. Guitarist Ben Monder adds a sense of floating detachment, and drummer Ferenc Nemeth does a great job of unobtrusively creating interesting settings.
* * * * | Fo’s Picks: 2, 3, 5, 7, 9
1. 8:40 – optimistic, almost jaunty theme, but with a softly bittersweet shadow
2. 6:58 – enigmatic tune with quiet Latin rhythm, cool sax & guitar solos
3. 3:30 – free-floating group interplay over slow guitar chords; crests gently
4. 5:32 – cute country ditty: laid-back, lazy and real friendly-like
5. 6:15 – Cole Porter tune chopped up and run on parallel tracks. Nice work.
6. 5:52 – slouching drag with a turbulent core, ho-hum melody but good solos
7. 5:11 – odd little tune, perky ‘n’ quirky theme, some muddy sections too
8. 6:48 – sweet Bill Evans tune, rocks gently: warm round of solos
9. 6:33 – totally romantic, slow/midtempo with violin, cinematic touch
