Tearing a page from Nick Cave, Leonard Cohen, and the Tindersticks’ play-book this is mostly Lanegan (ex-Screaming Trees, et al) with Campbell’s (Bell and Sebastian) minimal girlie breathy vocs. Lots of acoustic instruments, sparsely played, but lush too at times giving big nods to burlesque, blues and smarmy sleazy acoustic old timey stuff. Its all about the singer/songwriter aspect, in fact most of these sound like Cohen covers or the like. Great stuff, if chill. For fans of Anita Lane/Birthday Party, Tom Waits and (did I say?) Nick Cave.
1) very Leonard Cohen’ish: minor guitar arpeggios slow lilting waltz, with arrangements
2) ballady, with the tubular bells and slight twang is very Nick Cavey
3) hipster blues feel, minimal acoustic, seventh chords
4) total Nick Cave drama, Campbell speaks up a bit more
5) duet, doubled up vocals, smarmy burlesque swing
6) dark spooky blues, very Tom Waits vocal rip-off
7) upbeat swingy, Tom Waitsy
8) simple dobro acoustic 12 bar blues with kittenish lead/solo vocs by campbell
9) simple, folky, sweet
10) very simple guitar with subliminal bowing, minimal and pretty
11) epic feel, starts minimal ends with a chill full band
12) ENDS WITH 2:00 REMAINING, simple ballad, pretty
13) western swing, playful “fight fire with fire” chorus hook
14) simply minor piano/cello ballad, total early tom waits feel
15) tango with mourning violin, brief instrumental with vinyl pops and cracks to lend authenticity (?)
16) big strummy ballad, simple love song
17) retro 60’s pop feel with Campbell’s saccharine/precious breathy vocals taking center, for fans of Belle and Sebastian
