Slovenian (indie?) pop that is somewhat simple. I really wanted to just rip this apart because of the Michael Bolton-esque cover art, and dramatic, operatic self-importance of the packaging. But now I just feel bad about it. Enclosed is a note explaining that he is indeed Slovenian, and not Croatian, and that he wished us a happy new year. The music shares some of the same sentiment. It is attempting pop with the all the tools necessary; tight arrangements familiar vocal lines; but it just never comes together. His voice is solid, but not captivating, and the bass and percussion seem to be inorganically recorded and strangely mixed. It is a good attempt, but it just doesn’t seem to make it…completely. I also feel terrible for making the vocal comparison to Gogol Bordello; I must be ignorant or something if I think all Eastern Europeans sound alike. So it really isn’t that bad; just be prepared and take it with an open mind? I guess it is a bit different than the Michael Bolton I was expecting…I feel like I should help him out…So give the guy some airtime, even if it is for the sake of novelty. No FCCs.
1. Pop bounce, rhythmic guitars, structured pop song with repetitive vocal melody (3:49)
2. Weird, dark bass pattern drives the song and snarling vocals, rhythm section seems sequenced, as opposed to live, vocal patterns are starting to get clichéd (4:14)
3. Guitary hooks, loose and catchy, more nasty vocals, bass lines are prominent and groovin’ in second verse, ends in vocals.(3:09)
4. More bass driven pop with contour-y guitars jangling behind vocals, piano chords too!, (4:19)
*5. Probably most interesting track, some echoey effect-laden guitars and dominant bass, uses minor key chords to attain some pathos, truly strange bridge, multi-tracked bass solo thing! BAD ASS, (3:53)
6. Guitar chords weep, uses a sad chord progression(4:39)
*7. 12 bar blues? Really? Guitar solos are well thought-out and planned(6:18)
8. The nastier, desperate conclusion, with minor tonality and prominent rhythm section, (4:13)
