After The Gold Room – The Black Watch
Indie rock. A pretty solid EP from prolific (and underappreciated at KZSU) LA indie rockers, The Black Watch, fronted by Andrew Fredrick. Influence can be loosely traced to My Bloody Valentine, The Cure, The Beatles, The Go-Betweens, and even Nick Drake (who is cited commonly). Yet I would say it sounds more like The Strokes, Karl Blau, even Guided by Voices/Robert Pollard pop stuff? The production here is not at all lo-fi, though. 2 and 5 are remixes of tracks from their previous LP, Icing the Snow Queen. Recommended for people who may like solo Malkmus, or are sick of Merriweather Post Pavillion.
1. Definitely a Strokes feel to this, rollicking rocker with lots of distorted vocals, guitars, and big percussion. (2:30)
2. Distorted guitars behind rhythmic acoustic pop, synthy sounding guitar lead in chorus, interesting production, very lush and interesting in second half. (3:09)
*3. Sounds like Karl Blau, interesting layers of noise behind simplistic pop. Nice vocal melody and lovely backing vocals. (3:30)
*4. Whoa, sunny pop. Topical, political? Some tambourine and backing vocals augment this little jangle pop gem. (2:43)
5. More rhythmic pop rock with some distorted, treated guitars crunching. An easy enough groove. (4:21)
6. Singer/songwritery. Acoustic guitar. Still catchy enough, poppy. Not really Drake-esque…(2:51)
