Album Review

Dream rock. Mellow, but spacey, lush, space rock. The insert booklet name-drops Rogue Wave, Grandaddy, Earlimart, and Radar Bros. I’d say this is pretty accurate, but throw in some Radiohead and Ben Gibbard-esque vocals. Sounds a lot like Great Northern (current a-file). This is solid dream pop, but as an album not many tracks distinguish themselves. Production could be a bit more expansive for what they are going for. There are segments of tape where they wander off the beaten path, and these are some of the better moments. The better tracks are in the back half. Local band. No FCCs.

1. Mid-tempo dream rock. It’s got the OK Computer thing down here. Last 40 seconds are a slow fade out with soft acoustic guitars and electric guitar feedback. (4:14)
2. Chunky bass and chugging electric guitars with backing choral synth thing still going. (3:03)
3. Subdued acoustic number. Slow. Builds nicely with drums, distant keys, and backing vocals. (4:10)
4. Upbeat, shimmering, interweaving riffage, pleasant, lush track. (4:10)
*5. Distorted guitars create backdrop for melodic, driving skygazer rock. Rhythmic piano and guitar chords; nice overdubs. Great track. (3:48)
6. Light, airy backing vocals, more mid-tempo rock with spacey guitar effects and ethereal piano. (4:41)
*7. Slow, kind of dramatic, builds to some nice, reverbed out, chill space rock. (4:26)
*8. Way spacey, easy to get lost at the beginning… then the drums come in and it’s more mid-tempo dream rock. Hints of noisy, distorted guitars… should have gone for the guitar freak-out! (4:25)
*9. Melancholy, distant, builds to more pleasant stargazing, effect-laden guitar rock. Bass is simple but effective. (4:40)
10. Backing vocals are more prevalent here. This one is sort of like an acoustic pop song with the space rock studio treatment. Noisy ending. (4:51)
