Horror punk, noise rock, avant-garde, call it what you want, it’s noisy and macabre and out-there and intense. Varied percussion, rude time changes, loads of bang-a-gong piano, sparse instrumentation. Verses are unpredictable, but anchoring most of these tracks are cohesive, manageable & melodic choruses. This whole album sounds like the breakdown on that song that plays over the end credits in Moulin Rouge. Enormous, imperfect aggressive vocals I would compare only to Mike Patton. See also: Jello Biafra. They Might Be Giants. The Mountain Goats. The Thermals. Ludo. The guy who plays Mark in Rent. Conor Oberst when he really means it.
The Paper Chase are the project of John Congleton, who’s mixed and engineered loads of bands you’ve probably heard of. This is a concept album about natural disasters (seriously), part one of a two-part set (the second comes out in 2010). Congleton sings lead and handles all effects & guitars. Jason Garner (the Deathray Davies) on drums, Bobby Weaver on bass, Sean Kirkpatrick (Spoon) on keys.
**This is a gapless album, so watch out for the abrupt stops/starts. **
try: 3, 6, 2
FCC: 7 (a shame!), 8, 9
1. soft opening. vocals at 0:23, full volume at 0:42. piano and hi-hat, curiously upbeat doom march. nice build. STOP at 5:12.
*2. eerie keys & kitschy oriental string intro. plonky pedaled-piano interjections, halloweeny sound effects, melodic chorus with hi-hat-heavy drums.
*3. jittery, crazed percussion. clownish syncopated up-strum feel, high-pitched slidewhistle guitar. warning: the last chord is at the start of the 4th track.
4. slower, calmer vocals. drummy piano chords & strummed acoustic. drums kick in for slight rock-lilt / speed-up
5. angular guitars, tick-tock drums. gloomy, descending chords.
*6. hard-hitting saloon piano, irregular explosive drums. bizarre doom farce, replete w/ carnival & barn sounds. unexpectedly crests into very pretty melodic end. fade at 5:47 or cut at 6:00.
7. FCC thrumming piano and vocals. chord-built catchy chorus (there are callbacks!). nice derails on the last go-round.
8. FCC “ass” tiptoe keys & rattling drumsticks, hooky chorus. ends with offkey rendition of “he’s got the whole world in his hands”.
9. FCC abrasive, syncopated noise punk segues into big string chorus.
10. synthy vocals and creepy backing “ahh”. big climax, cushy landing.
