Melancholy, out-of-the-box grunge from Mississippi. Suffice it to say these guys have their bass turned up really, really loud. Songs are swirly, heavy, moody, unforgiving -- and on the epic side. This is rule-breaking grunge that isn’t afraid to change its tune midway into what sounds like just another classic rocker. For those of you who judge songs by their first 15 seconds, your tactics are useless here! I mean, it’s not Zeppelin, but whatever. It’s a very even record -- pick any track. 1 & 2 for straighter grunge, 3 for more experimental, 4 for a mix of both, 5 for indie pop.

Sounds like: that guy from Interpol got a gig fronting the Foo Fighters, but neglected to learn how to use a bass amp properly. Okay really: Nirvana. Queens of the Stone Age. Smashing Pumpkins. Soundgarden. Etc.

try: 3, 5

1. soft opener. maybe fade in the first 7 seconds? heavy, jagged, rocky. off-the-beat percussive strums. wailing electric & amp noise. fuzzy bass. don’t be faked out by the mid-song stop, it’s a full track.
2. a headbanger. hypnotic keys over heavy, sludgy sustained guitar. blow-out bass. very nirvana electric riff.
*3. splattery guitar start slides into: hi-hat heavy kit. shimmery twang sustain. calm central vocals. doubled bass & vocal melody. severe minor electric. goes for a pink floydian song arc, and kinda makes it.
4. fast rocky intro descends into creepy, lazy, ploddy body. doubled electric & vocal melody, also creepy, repetitive. harder bridge.
*5. uncharacteristic: slow, indie, endearing. arpeggiated harmonics. warm guitar/bass. bulges into shimmery wall of sound. righteous electric guitar takeover about 2:20 to end. watch out, there are several false endings -- let the whole track play out.
