ANDY MILNE & BENOÎT DELBECQ: Where Is Pannonica?
Songlines, 2009
AVANT-GARDE – Impressive piano duets from Canada, featuring intriguing, complicated rhythms created via excellent use of prepared piano techniques (inserting foreign objects into the stringwork to create unusual effects). Over this, melodies poke and question, falling into wide-open improv spaces or tight, enigmatic dialogues. Recommended!
* * * * | Try any track. Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 4, 5, 7, 10
1. 4:44 – impressionistic melody over mysterious clockwork atmosphere
2. 3:18 – slow, open, lots of space as pianos drift around each other
3. 5:57 – bright, inquisitive over gently percussive background, turns quiet
4. 6:37 – ominous, churning, and suspenseful: moves in close coordination
5. 4:39 – dispersed fragments gradually come together in wintry gusts
6. 6:21 – droning string tones; dusty cobwebs turns to heavy churning, fades
7. 6:04 – strange pulse; clusters of piano notes dropped amidst key changes
8. 3:17 – spacious, melancholy tone poem
9. 2:51 – jazzy circular piano groove, elaborately embroidered. Leads into…
10. 4:59 – …a gentler circular groove, becomes calmly hypnotic
11. 3:02 – like a cave: dark, quiet, dripping… kind of spooky
