Genre: Singer/Songwriter Indie/Folk Pop
Sounds like: Aimee Mann, The Weepies, Thao, Tegan and Sara
Play Tracks: 3,4, 7,8
General: Storytelling minimalist folk/pop that saturates solitude with low-fi guitar and celebrates happiness with layers of quirky instrumentation. Julie Peel has a unique voice that projects both gritty edge and soft silkiness. Expect to hear a charming integration of upright bass, cello, real piano, ukulele, banjo, kazoo, horns, and the occasional resonance of electric guitar—giving this folk pop record some atmosphere. Perfect soundtrack for a winter road trip through snow-covered trees and barren countrysides.
Track Descriptions (NO FCCs Detected):
1. Living In a Movie (3:20)—bouncy superficial fun, ukulele brings happy sentiments with shadowing piano rift, Regina Spektor stuttering vocals during chorus
2. Innocence (4:39)—starts with sound of drums, goes into piano with acoustic guitar picking, soft poppy ballad
3. Sister (3:39)—Acoustic minor chords changes that drive into an almost bitter vox, similar to Tegan and Sara, this track has got more bite and attitude
4. Unfold (3:38)—song builds on a simple acoustic guitar arrangement then the use of reverb, drums, and a conjoining male vox makes expands this track, musically and emotionally, into an addictive space of shared loneliness
5. The Piece of the My Heart (3:02)- Poppy tune of layered guitars and percussion that sounds like an Apple commercial written intentionally for Valentine’s Day heart-shaped i-pods.
6. Ok (3:43)—quiet folk diddy with sad yet expressive vocals
7. The Greatest Story (4:03) —pursues indie-folk rock with catchy electric guitar rifts and driving harmonies, has this alt-country vibe similar to some of Wilco’s folksier material
8. Near the Sun (3:43)—self-reflective track that sounds just like Aimee Mann, creative use of bongos and tambourine gives this a different feel
9. Once More With Feeling (3:57)—fun acoustic guitar chords chased by electric guitar underrifts, deeper vox has a little bit of jazzy soul, parts of chorus has just vox and percussion as guitars drop out
10. In Slow Motion (4:05)—another expressive folk pop diddy of acoustic guitar picking
11. Alone (3:18)—“sexy sounding” female vox over strumming ukulele, kazoo makes this quirky
12. Broken (bonus track)—slow and relaxed vibe about an emotional apology, cello adds some dimension
