PLOUG/PETTERSEN/BADENHORST: Equilibrium
Songlines, 2009
AVANT-GARDE – Innovative trio (from Denmark, Norway and Belgium) with guitars, reeds and voice/live electronics. Combines stark beauty with uncomfortable harmony, or soothing calm with agitated tension; as a result, the close, intimate recording contrasts with often chilly content that can feel emotionally distant and disquieting.
* * * * | Fo’s Picks: 2, 4, 6, 9, 12, 13
1. 0:42 – high, wordless vocal; sweet melody
2. 6:09 – voice drifts high above tight circular patterns from guitar & clarinet
3. 5:24 – solo voice, then trio; built on a simple phrase, reaching upward
4. 5:09 – wintry: stark solo clarinet, then tightly spinning trio
5. 4:10 – soft and folksy, but with an oddball harmonic approach
6. 8:30 – slow and eerie, very spacious: voice flutters & creaks in the dark
7. 0:47 – same melody as #1, calm chamber instrumental
8. 5:16 – very slow tiptoe melody; first in duets, then as a somber, sleepy trio
9. 2:57 – lonely voice floats over a quiet beeping loop, multiplies
10. 2:24 – tweaky electronics and creaky voice, becomes a quiet bubbling
11. 0:45 – same melody as #1 & #7, high, remote instrumental
12. 6:12 – horns casually drape melodies over a gentle guitar spiral
13. 2:46 – percussive, interesting blend of sounds, creepy vocal/breath noises
14. 4:56 – verrry sloooow, comes up from silence: the melodic fragment from tracks 1,7,11 leads into ominous atmosphere, low and creaky pulse
