Nickodemus – Sun People Remixed
Reviewed by Sadie O., 11/11/09
Club mixes from New York, but with deeply international roots. Mostly chill and a bit trance-y, but with lots of syncopation and vocals and elements from simply everywhere. Everything is really lovely and warm.
No FCCs detected – very positive vibe. I like 3, 10 and 11 best.
1. 7:35 **subdued solo African chanting and flutes for first minute, then swingy midtempo handdrums. After almost 2 minutes there’s a bass groove and a bit of Dancehall vocals, very relaxed vibe, sweet.
2. 4:35 ***Dancehall vocals intro, horn flourishes, uptempo dub skank ,bouncy and fun – “outernational” feel.
3. 4:09 ****very upbeat syncopated groove, eastern European accordion and Indian vocals. Great, groovy mashup.
4. 5:39 **thumping 4/4 beat and disco claps, bouncing bassline, preaching, then righteous hip hop vocals. Relaxed vibe, a bit sweetly religious.
5. 5:04 ***boinky little toy piano with funky disco overtones, adds layers into irresistible dance groove with African vocals. Wow! When this thing started out, it didn’t seem like it was going to get this good!
6. 5:27 ***funky cowbell and blats… relaxed, trance-y vibe with lovely female Indian vocals, but also a club/dance element. Huh!
7. 7:08 **little bits o’ beats, gets a Latin percussion swing, and male vocals in Spanish. But it’s also dubby, trance-y, clubby… Odd but cool.
8. 9:25 **building beats… snips of chants. Rather subdued, but uptempo and syncopated. Gets really complicated, but swingy and nice.
9. 4:46 ***tweedles and growls and beats, terribly mysterious – then suddenly it’s blats and club beats. Whoosh! Blat! Tweedle! Yay!
10. 7:37 ****hand drums, eastern flutes – you can see the birds soaring between the minarets… relaxed and swingy, with a whole selection of great flute/horns, and bits of Bhangra drums.
11. 5:46 ****funky! Blatty! Dubby! Righteous hip hop vocals (see track 4).
12. 8:17 ***layering on the beats into complex slightly uptempo syncopation, builds energy as it goes. A bit of Africa in the snips of vocal chants.
