Prog + avant-jazz instrumentals, a VERY electric guitar trio w/bass, drums, electronics, some keyboards. Often rocking, sometimes indie-rock tuneful, but usually striving for advanced-sounding improvising and solo spaces. Genre-crossing hints abound, with prog and psych coming to mind frequently. Throughout, Nels shows off jazz chops and rock effects. A more expansive sound than the previous 'Singers albums.
DISK ONE -- New studio stuff.
1,4,6,9,13 - transition pieces; drifting, less eventful.
2- Snappy groove, squiggly guitar.
3- Pretty. Catchy bass riff, gentle sound. Sparkling guitar.
5- Prog attack, really cool, slashing.
7- Delicious acoustic riffs; prog influence. Mellow groove with "world" percussion.
8- Crunchy electronics noodling. Noise fans, alert.
10- Funk/reggae driven groove. Big intensity. SO COOL.
11- A bit sinister, slowly twining. Quiet start.
12- Unsettling chimes, into something dark and heavy. Mildly metal; lotsa guitar shredding.
DISK TWO -- Live: WATCH for applause/spoken intros. Every track is great, but they're long for most shows (7-8 minutes)
1- Quiet, but you can tell it's gonna get menacing!
2- Prog-poppy, cool-handed jazz solo, then lots of noisy psych
3- Angry, ragged, thick. Draws from metal & math rock.
4- Skittery, light, jazzy - then country/folky! Kinda quiet.
5- Playful jazz guitar, tuneful. Fast friendly psych later. Spoken intro.
6- Shimmery noise, then a dark & catchy composition.
7- Propulsive, open-ended jazz. Rockin' proggy ending. Drum solo opens.
8- Bubbling midtempo funk.
