MICHAEL GREGORY JACKSON: Clarity
ESP-Disk’, 1976
1970s LOFT JAZZ – An unusual session with guitarist Jackson alongside some heavy hitters (David Murray, Oliver Lake, Wadada Leo Smith). Blends avant-garde strains with a soulful or folksy vibe, mostly slow paced & moody but with a sharp edge. Liner notes evoke a “rainy day” vibe, and that’s about right. Very interesting stuff!
Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 4, 6
1. 4:28 – quietly busy, highly melodic, acoustic guitar jostles with sedate horns
2. 4:05 – similar vibe to #1, but slower, with a feeling of tension
3. 3:25 – guitar & alto sax: unison duet falls apart, settles into improv dialogue
4. 8:01 – solo guitar: lovely patterns become huge and forceful, then rushing
5. 1:47 – pleasing melodic interlude
6. 9:24 – oblique melody dissolves into exotic group improv, turns skronky
7. 4:27 – duet: electric guitar & sax chase each other like squirrels on a tree
8. 6:43 – slow, methodical melody, turns loose and lyrical after 4 minutes.
