10 Foot Ganja Plant – 10 Deadly Shots, Vol 1
Reviewed by Sadie O., 6/25/10
Roots Rock Reggae instrumentals by a fine band from the Northeast US, very deliberately in the classic 70’s stylee. Audio purists note: “We recorded most of the tracks live to reel to reel tape and then overdubbed some vocals, keyboards, guitars and horns. We cut the final recordings straight to vinyl so that the digital transfers have the warmth and feel of classic vinyl sides.” Great for soundbeds, perfect for burning trees… My only caveat is that the sax is too omnipresent, but you could do a lot worse than an up-your-nose sax, really…
1. 2:54 ***relaxed midtempo in the Rock Steady vein, creamy guitar.
2. 3:41 **downtempo, swingy bubble, “No Woman No Cry” feel, lounge-lizard sax.
3. 2:45 ***uptempo swingy ska, great sound – really takes ya back.
4. 3:50 ***downtempo, very relaxed with a great bass keyboard sound.
5. 3:30 **midtempo roots bubble, a bit of stepping razor mood, some instruments that would seem to be dueling except they’re a bit stoned.
6. 3:58 **deeply meaningful intro, then similar track to previous one, except that the sax hogs the spotlight.
7. 3:24 ***classic original ska sound, a real treat.
8. 3:08 **relaxed rocksteady groove, groovy bits of hand percussion.
9. 3:33 **similar to last track, with some chime-y sounds and stuttery rhythm guitar(?).
10. 3:26 ***downtempo swingy skank.
