SARAH WILSON: Trapeze Project
Brass Tonic, 2010
MODERN JAZZ – Local trumpeter/vocalist leads an impressive group of improv-oriented players through a quirky but accessible set with hints of world music and pop. Wilson is a composer foremost, but her economical, no-frills style on trumpet also anchors the tunes against the wilder flights of clarinet and piano. And her deadpan singing (4,7,11) might fit in with a folk-pop/singer-songwriter set. FCC clean.
Sarah Wilson : trumpet, vocals
Myra Melford : piano
Ben Goldberg : clarinet
Jerome Harris : bass
Scott Amendola : drums
Fo’s Picks: 1, 3, 5, 6, 9, 10, 12
1. 3:02 – happy march with a sort of South African lilt; oddball clarinet solo
2. 5:11 – slow, rather melancholy; spare trumpet, then overlapping solos
3. 5:21 – good time stompin’ drums & piano; clarinet solo flies away with it
4. 4:51 – slow and lyrical, with drawn-out vocal over gentle band
5. 6:50 – relaxed walking rhythm, string-pulling bass solo, stirring piano
6. 5:40 – quick drum/bass groove, subdued trumpet solo, then it spins out
7. 3:42 – Joy Division tune, slow and spare vocal against fluttery backdrop
8. 3:22 – brisk churn, unison melody, clarinet and trumpet quiver
9. 7:20 – solo clarinet spins in high spirals, brooding band slips in quietly
10. 6:10 – warm intro, piano & drums take it “out,” bass solo brings it back
11. 5:01 – easygoing stroll with folksy vocal, a nice homey feel
12. 4:13 – laid back, optimistic New Orleans tribute: nice piano & drums
