ARGENTA TRIO: The Piano Trios of Felix Mendelssohn
Bridge: 2010
Robert Schumann said of Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847), “[He] is the Mozart of the 19th century; the brightest of our composers”. The Piano Trio in D minor, Op. 49 (1839) is one of the most popular chamber works in the literature. The first mvmt begins with a long, arching cello melody and is full of excitement. The second mvmt is charming and wistful. The third mvt a delightful scherzo, and the fourth a brilliant dance. The Song Without Words Op. 53, No. 2 seems to question why I love you. The Piano Trio in C minor, Op. 66 (1844-45) has a dark, questioning first mvmt. The second mvmt expresses restless, heartfelt passion, and the third is another elfin confection a la A Midsummer Night’s Dream, while the fourth begins with a surging minor key melody, and ends with energetic treatment of a solemn chorale theme, used also by Bach.
1. (10:11) Mendelssohn: Trio in D minor Op. 49. I. Molto allegro agitato
