MINDRU KATZ, PIANO, PLAYS CONCERT FAVORITES
Label: Cembal d’amour 2008

Mindru Katz (1925-1978), a child prodigy, performed worldwide after emigrating from Romania to Israel in 1959. His recordings are very highly regarded by connoisseurs. Here, he demonstrates singing tone, clear articulation, brilliant color, and thrilling virtuosity. The Haydn Arietta is lyrical. The Beethoven 32 Variations in C minor illustrate his mastery of changes in harmony and texture, employing arpeggios, passages in thirds, staccato and legato touches, and rhythmic changes. The 8-bar theme and variations sound above a descending chromatic chord progression. Beethoven’s “Moonlight” Sonata is familiar to all, with flowing 1st mvmt, 2nd mvmt’s stately dance, and 3rd mvmt’s storm and drama. Brahms’ B-flat Intermezzo, Op. 117 is a “cradle song for my sorrows.” The G minor Rhapsody insistently relates a nobleman’s complaint, and the E-flat Rhapsody Op. 119 a proud victory. Liszt’s First Mephisto Waltz (The Dance in the Village Inn) portrays a village wedding feast to which Faust invites the devil, who fiddles seductive melodies that turn to wild dance, before a nightingale’s love-song ends the evening.
