Ursula 1000 – Mondo Beyondo
Reviewed by Sadie O., 9/27/11
Eclectic and utterly frug-worthy electronica by Alex Gimeno (the multi-instrumentalist producer Ursula 1000) and a mess of guest vocalists. All full of great beats and noises, and lots of fun.
1. 3:42 ***typing noises, then forceful midtempo bossa nova/60’s/electronica bopper. Goes all weebly and recovers. Lots of fun sounds.
2. 3:49 ****downtempo, almost a bit lounge-y, uber-cool, and with Fred Schneider (B-52s – you remember…) A match made in heaven, clearly.
3. 3:42 ***big timpani intro, then woobly little midtempo electronic go-go dance with snarky female disco rap from Ms G.
4. 3:37 **syncopated insect dance with harps and French spoken word by Isabelle Antena.
5. 3:21 ***big electronic frug with farfisa and fuzz and grunting.
6. 4:36 ***groovy, relaxed pseudo-samba with Brazil ’66 style vocals (from a Thievery Corp vocalist! Huh!) and cuica.
7. 2:50 ***pure 60’s rock, with razor sharp guitar and grunts.
8. 3:42 ***midtempo, bass-heavy wiggle with more vocals from Ms. G (who sounds a lot like MIA…)
9. 3:28 **4/4 beat, rather ominous buzzings and minor key modulations…
10. 3:43 ****boopity boppity little beat with a disco tinge, syncopation, and indeed, quite a large fly. Nice percussion, great b-movie dialog.
11. 3:50 ***uptempo and upbeat 60’s jerk with a hint of garage in the guitar.
12. 4:02 ***super funky, rather down-tempo, with slide guitar that makes it a bit Southern-Rock flavored and Big Mike Geier from Kingsized. One way or the other, definitely soaking in some red beans and rice…
13. 4:21 ***big ugly haunted house noises (electronically speaking) and loud bass grunts and treble screeeks, farfisa, slightly uptempo go-go strut. Extremely slow fade.
