Tribattery Pops, a brass & reeds band in NYC, describes their repertoire as “classics from Sousa to Gaga” and you gotta like that! There also are some interesting jazz standards here. It’s sort of stuff you hear at a community picnic or Veterans Day parade. To be honest, the performances range from quite good to quite average (like a fair high-school stage band).

1 Mid-slow. Easy-going melody on reeds, bottom by trombone & tuba. (2:39)
2 ** Soulful take on a Mingus classic with good sax solos. Compare to Jeff Beck. (5:23)
3 * A fun, pre-jazz march. Bright sound with trumpet, clarinet, glockenspiel. (1:52)
4 Mid-fast. Trying mightily to sound like Copland’s “Rodeo”, but failing. (2:59)
5 Lady Gaga song comes close to being interesting. Dull & clompy with no swing (3:54)
6 * Good treatment of Horace Silver’s wonderful tune. Good ensemble sound. Melody carried by brass and saxes, with little flourishes by flutes & bells. Quite nicely done. (4:29)
7 Lady Gaga again. An oompah band trying to be hip. Comes across as silly. (2:51)
8 ** Fine solos by flute & clarinet, group response from brass. A bit of a dance beat. (2:41)
9 * Cannonball’s very groovy tune. Good solos by tenor sax & trumpet. (2:32)
