AIMTORONTO ORCHESTRA: Year of the Boar
Barnyard, 2011
AVANT-GARDE – This 17-piece ensemble from the Association of Improvising Musicians Toronto performs a diverse set of adventurous original works, some definitely avant-jazz with lots of improv space, others more on the classical or new-music side. The performances are impressive: going flat out or gazing inward, stomping, clattering, droning or dancing, and turning on a dime. Some FCC-clean vocals.
Try any. Fo’s Picks: 2, 4, 5, 7
1. 5:44 – wacky march into a ponderous crawl, jumps back up, whistling end
2. 7:15 – orchestral: droning harmonies and dissonance, slowly shifting…
3. 10:04 – big scurrying squeals broken by long stretches of muttering improv
4. 14:18 – quiet burbling improv, gradually rising conflict/tension, horns/voice madness, thicket of strings, slow motion, more madness, eerie end
5. 4:28 – bouncy clockwork motion, either hypnotic or annoying, you choose
6. 20:19 – very slow start with pauses; first 7:00 build to large-scale improv, much quieter / more spacious after that, but thumping near the end
7. 7:31 – complex marionette dance… big drone builds up, then they rock out
