Who Is She? Goddess Energy
Reviewed by DJ suzi boneshaker
Label: Father/Daughter Records
Release date: August 25, 2023
All tracks are recommended. My faves: 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 8 FCCs detected on: 5, 9, 10
Indie Rock, Alternative Rock, Punk. Power-pop
RIYL: Tacocat, Lisa Prank, Chastity Belt, Go Sailor, Tiger Trap, The Softies
Who is She? This Seattle super group is comprised of Bree McKenna and Emily Nokes of Tacocat, Robin Edwards of Lisa Prank, and Julia Shapiro of Chastity Belt. Melodic, pop explosion. Happy vibes sprinkled with sarcasm.
1) Goddess energy – nice, strong intro song to this release. Tribute to friend that declined their lunch invite as it would be “too much goddess energy.” Lighthearted pop rock 1:19
2) 96 Ghouls - fcc clean – starts with a bassline and giggles. Gothy pop/rock songabout the ghoulish process of online dating and how it dehumanizes people. 1:55
3) Moviepass – did you love Moviepass? So did they. Lighthearted mid-temp pop song with talking and singing 1:58
4) Thursday – they love Thursday, so they wrote a sweet mid-tempo song about it (maybe they listen to my show??) 3:13
5) My My Orca Card – their take on Le Tigre’s My My Metro Card. Electro mid-tempo more serious sounding track. – lotsa FCCs (fuck) 2:13
6) Shania – this is response song to Shania Twain’s 1998 hit “That Don’t Impress Me Much.” no FCCs. Simple pop/rock song. 1:27
7) Anne Hathaway – In defense of Anne Hathaway. Singing/talking happy sounding pop/rock song. FCC clean 1:35
8) Please Don’t Kick Us Out – mid tempo – ethereal-ish guitar. Song about the housing crisis in Seattle -from their personal experience. 2:18
9) See-Monkeys – gothy vibe song about how it seems that everyone tends to become invested in the lives of others on social media even if they aren’t “friends” with them (FCC: heard quietly whispered towards the end (leave me the fuck alone) 2:45
10) Bitch for God – this song (sung and spoken) was written about Marianne Williamson before she announced her second bid at the 2024 presidency (FCC bitch sung throughout the song) 1:12
11) All Mixed Up – a song about a missed connection ad in Seattle. A person that bought a mixed tape found in a thrift store and is desperately trying to find the creator – how romantic! 2:06
