Conceptual three-part improvisational piece by sound artist Richie Culver, exploring his experiences with sleep paralysis. Accompanied by a handwritten longform poem intended to be read by the listener as the piece progresses (and in this way, mirroring the condition's speech inhibition). Taps into that particular state of mind where uncertainty toggles between unquenchable interest and true terror.
Another great experimental release from the Drowned by Locals label. The original piece is accompanied by two impressive remixes by pessimist and bod [包家巷] in a nod to the artist's background in techno/electronic music.
1. (27:12) Opens in a hypnotic, repetitive clicking intro. A warm, humming swarm of noise slowly gets louder and closer. A froth of electrically-charged bubbling pulses enters the mix. At the 20 min mark what starts as a slow knocking noise unfolds into a steady kickdrum beat.
2. (6:34) Dark, brooding, beat with menacing mechanical/industrial effects. Speaker reads a gruesome poem in a distorted voice as the beat blossoms in intensity
3. (2:12) Staticy, abrasive, with blurred-out vocals, sharp synthesizer bursts, and hammering staccato rhythms
