FREAK FOLK; FEMALE SINGER-SONGWRITER
Originally from NorCal, now based in the LA area, Jessica Pratt has released her fourth album and the first in 5 years. This music has a spacey, hippy-ish vibe (Pitchfork calls it “hypnagogic folk music”), and Pratt’s voice and vocal approach remind me of 1960s pop chanteuses, but with tons of production (dreamy ambiance, infinite reverb, overlaid vocals). All songs are written or co-written by Pratt who also plays guitar & sometimes drums. She’s accompanied by keyboards, occasional sax, bass, drums.
FCC clean
Released May 2024
1 ** mid-tempo. pretty & catchy. seems to be about life’s uncertainties (3:08)
2 * mid-tempo. moving on. mainly acoustic with a bossa nova lilt (3:46)
3 slow. strummed acoustic, a bit dreary (3:09)
4 slow. ambiguous but pleasant. more bossa nova. acoustic gtr, bongos, organ (3:25)
5 very slow. just getting by. acoustic gtr & hand percussion. very simple (3:27)
6 very slow. strange & dreamy, and it’s about strange dreams. organ, sounds (2:41)
7 * very slow. moody but intriguing. piano, synth’d strings & horns (2:32)
8 slow. gentle instrumental with acoustic guitar and synth (1:31)
9 ** mid-slow. been through bad luck, but gonna be fine. pleasant. nicest melody. (3:35)
