KYLE EASTWOOD: Songs from the Chateau
Rendezvous, 2011

CONTEMPORARY JAZZ – Bassist Eastwood has a tight, grooving quintet on this disc, easily his best to date. The sound is straight down the line, solidly mainstream, but that’s a departure from his earlier pop-jazz and smooth material. He switches between electric and acoustic, cool, funky or boppish, but always with catchy hooks.

By the way, you might have heard of Kyle’s dad, a guy named Clint. He's made a few movies. :)

Fo’s Picks: 1, 2, 5, 6, 7

1. 4:49 – thick but very catchy swinging groove: trumpet & sax lay it down
2. 6:35 – chilly tone, electric bass & piano slink under slow horns
3. 5:19 – light uptempo beat with calypso theme and slightly bittersweet tinge
4. 5:04 – warm sing-song melody over a marching rhythm
5. 6:18 – percussive with cool-toned “Spanish” feel: trumpet soars, solid bass
6. 5:09 – bright acid-jazzy sound with tight piano riff, rolling flugelhorn
7. 5:48 – cool cinematic feel, sax tosses out lines, bass has plenty to say
8. 5:01 – chill-out jazz, an atmospheric ballad with prominent bass solo
9. 5:54 – light funk-jazz stroll: horns bounce lines back & forth
