[coll]: Piano Music of Argentina. Mirian Conti, pianist
Label: Steinway & Sons, 2012

These pieces, beautifully played by Ms. Conti, are generally in Neo-Romantic harmonic and melodic style and very easy to listen to. All were composed between 1920 and today by Argentine composers who were born from the 1880s to 1930s. Many pieces are based on folk tunes or popular dances. They express melancholy, longing and nostalgia, with each composer seeking to create a national voice for Argentinian music. Balcarce is the leader of Argentina’s school for tango orchestras. Sáenz composed in the French style. Buchardo is known to everyone in Argentina as founder of the National Conservatory in 1924. Guastavino (1912-2000) is still popularly performed and recorded.
